Abdominal Wall Hernias

Evaluation and surgical repair of hernias with choice of open or laparoscopic technique depending on the type of hernia, the patient’s history and needs.

When to seek surgical evaluation

  • Swelling in the groin, umbilicus or old incision
  • Pain or weight that increases with standing/coughing/fatigue
  • Hernia that is growing or affecting daily life
  • Pain, hard swelling, vomiting or inability to reduce – urgent evaluation

What happens at the first appointment

  • Clinical examination and, where necessary, ultrasound or CT scan
  • Assessment of risk of strangulation and impact on daily life
  • Selection of technique and mesh when indicated
  • Recovery and return to work/exercise plan
Goal: not to make a hasty decision. Surgery is recommended when the expected benefit outweighs the risks and when alternatives have been evaluated.
